Buying the right capacitor from a trustworthy source is as important as choosing the right spec. The market for counterfeit and substandard caps is large, especially on auction sites.

Recommended Brands and Series

Japanese manufacturers consistently produce the most reliable capacitors for PC and audio applications. Nippon Chemi-Con, Panasonic, and Nichicon are the three most trusted names in the hobby community.

For low-ESR electrolytic replacement, the recommended series are Chemi-Con KZE and KY, Panasonic FM and FR, and Nichicon HZ and HE. For polymer upgrades in VRM positions, look at Panasonic SP-Cap, Nichicon PW, and Rubycon ZLH poly.

Rubycon (Japan), ELNA (Japan), and United Chemi-Con (also Nippon Chemi-Con brand) are also well-regarded. Taiwanese brands such as Teapo and CapXon are acceptable for secondary positions but not recommended for primary VRM output.

Sourcing: Where to Buy Safely

Authorized distributors are the safest source. Mouser Electronics, Digi-Key, and Farnell/Newark carry genuine stock from all major Japanese brands. Prices are higher than auction platforms, but authenticity is guaranteed.

For smaller quantities at lower cost, RS Components and LCSC (for Chinese brands) are alternatives. Some CapsMod members have good experience with specialized European electronics retailers for Japanese brands at fair prices.

Recognizing Fake Capacitors

Counterfeit caps often have printing that smears or rubs off easily. The sleeve print may be slightly blurry or misaligned. The top vent marks on a genuine Japanese cap are precisely formed, while fakes often have shallow or irregular vents.

Check the batch code format. Genuine Panasonic caps have a consistent date code format stamped or printed on the sleeve. Cross-reference this with the lot code format documented on the brand's website.

If the price is more than 50% below the authorized distributor price for the same series and value, the product is almost certainly counterfeit or remarked.

Storing New Stock

Electrolytic capacitors store best at room temperature in a dry environment, away from direct sunlight. Long-term storage below the formation voltage can thin the aluminum oxide dielectric layer. Caps stored unused for more than 2 years should be reformed before use.

Reforming means applying the rated voltage through a series resistor (typically 10 kΩ) for 30–60 minutes. This rebuilds the dielectric layer gradually without stressing the cap. Skip this step for polymer caps, as their dielectric does not require reforming.
